GENERAL OVERVIEW: iBT Writing

THE WRITING SECTION IS
  • the last section of the TOEFL
  • directly after the Speaking Section
  • approximately 1 hour long
  • designed for the academic abilities of a high-school junior
  • a test of your ability to write in ACADEMIC English
    • NOTE: This does NOT mean you have to have existing knowledge of the topic you're writing on. TOEFL will give you all the relevant academic information you need to complete the essays.

TOEFL asks you to write two essays
  • One Integrated Essay
  • One Independent Essay


_______THREE_______
The Integrated Essay
  • You have 3 minutes to read a passage on an academic topic
  • You listen to a lecture on the same topic
  • The listening will always contrast the reading
  • This contrast is always in a "POINT - COUNTERPOINT" structure
  • You are asked to summarize the listening and explain how it opposes the reading
  • You have 20 minutes to write approximately 175 words
